Larazotide is a man-made peptide created from a toxin present in bacteria. It works by adjusting the permeability of the intestines. Larazotide’s goal is to bring back the normal operation of tight junctions, which are groups of specialized proteins that control the permeability of the intestinal wall. Larazotide is a modified, synthetic copy of the cholera toxin. Studies have demonstrated that it can influence tight junctions, thereby changing the permeability of the intestines.
